Fujitsu Laboratories, in partnership with Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, has successfully cracked a 923-bit pairing-based cryptography. The task took 148.2 days to accomplish, far less time than the several hundred thousand years previously estimated. Fujitsu accomplished this using 21 personal computers running 252 processing cores.
Fujitsu was able to accomplish such an impressive feat by utilizing various new technologies in cryptanalysis. Fujitsu has stated their research is intended to provide information on the true quality of current cryptographic standards and empower technology users to effectively manage their security.
